Well: The Dive She Fears

By Nkosie

PROMPT — If only ...

I’m just a girl, she insists.

Her disposition obscures

The extent of her affection.

She lures me closer,

Glories in the wealth of my attention.

I’m a well of love.

She hesitates—

To plunge in

And sink in.

She falls back

Whenever she nears.

It’s the unknown

She fears.

So,

She is invested elsewhere,

But I swear

Her profit is here.

If only

She would let loose

And dive

Into the well.

To swim

Toward the toll

Of the wedding bell.
