A Mother and Daughter

By Gaurav Ojha

PROMPT—No one noticed ...

Mother, when your dreams begin to crumble before the eyes

Feel the sunshine you have been hiding to protect your daughter

Even if your daughter rejects your reflection

Think of yourself as a shadow she needs during desperation

Mother, you are compassionate

Love without a condition or comparison

Mother, when your daughter finds your care and concern

Boring, burdensome, tedious, routine, and repetitive

Let her dance to the rhythm of her decisions

Mother, enjoy her music in your heart

Realize that even the right decisions turn into mistakes

Determinations get dissipated

A mother and daughter can be wrong about many things together

Mother don’t allow errors to take away her freedom

Encourage her to find a space away from the ways of the world

To be at ease with herself outside the boxes of expectations

Mother, don’t bracket her into your image

Don’t allow your fear to determine her courage

See how she paints her canvas

Learn to appreciate her art

Mother, you don't need to throw away the buttons

from your daughter's tattered clothes

You may need them to stitch her life together later

But for now

Mother, if you can make your daughter feel

She is never alone in her thoughts

You can hold her hand

But you don’t need to become her mirror
